Vision of Caritas Jordan

“ There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land ” (Deuteronomy, 15:11)

Caritas is the equivalent Latin word for love. As Pope Benedict XVI spoke in his encyclical letter Caritas in Veritate:

“Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by his earthly life and especially by his death and resurrection, is the principal driving force behind the authentic development of every person and of all humanity. Love — caritas — is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. […] All people feel the interior impulse to love authentically: love and truth never abandon them completely, because these are the vocation planted by God in the heart and mind of every human person.”

Caritas Jordan vision is based on the Christian principles of dignity of every human being with a special concern for the poor. According to the Bible, all human beings have been created in the image of God that is sacred. Human life possessed a given dignity since its creation and not from any action of its own. Every person has thus some basic rights and responsibilities that cannot be taken away from him/her regardless of any social or political structures. Once this has been acknowledged, it becomes possible to work for the common good of the whole society.

Caritas Jordan believes that in every economic, political and social decision, a special concern must be given to the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. When this is done the entire community becomes stronger, because the helplessness of any member wounds the rest of the society.

Caritas Jordan thus takes an active role in the development of the local community, promoting such values as justice, solidarity and social cohesion.
