Caritas Jordan Is Awarded “Prix Caritas”

Since 2003, Caritas Switzerland has awarded the Prix Caritas in June each year. This prize honors personalities for their admirable commitment, their outstanding work in the social sphere, in development cooperation and in intercultural understanding. The recipients of the award stand out by their innovative and long-term commitment, and rely on political and social support.

For this year 2014, Caritas Switzerland chose Caritas Jordan and JRS “ Jesuit Refugees Service” in Syria to take this award for the great efforts and human mission that both organizations are doing to serve the Syrian Refugees with various services.

On Saturday, June 18, 2014, more than (800) personalities of politicians, media representatives, journalists, ecclesiasts and elite people from the Swiss society gathered at Luzern Grand Hall to be part of this event.

The ceremony started with a musical piece by a Swiss band including 2 Syrian musicians who play music that reflects the Syrian culture. A documentary film prepared by Caritas Switzerland followed showing the work done by Caritas in Jordan and JRS in Syria.

Mr. Wael Suleiman, Caritas Jordan General Director and Fr. Nawras Sammour, Regional Director of JRS, were called to stage to receive the award by Luzern Mayer, Stephan Roth and Caritas Switzerland Director, Hugo Fasel.

“Your actions towards the Syrian crisis give us inspiration,” Mayer Roth says in his speech.

“Today, we extend our gratitude to all our partners who believed in the need to lend a hand and build new bridges between human beings. Our deepest appreciation goes to the Swiss government and people, as well as to Caritas Switzerland for the support, pieces of advice and contribution.” Says Mr. Suleiman in his speech after receiving the award.

The ceremony was concluded by a reception gathering all attendees to celebrate and thank the winners.

The Speech of Mr. Wael During the Ceremony

Our beloved countries have not seen peace for more than 70 years. Many generations lived on this land deprived of basic human rights, witnessed never ending wars, which mistakenly and unfortunately intended to reach peace!

Caritas Jordan believes it exists as a mission, not a Job, and conveys solidarity, justice, love messages and more importantly peace. Caritas Jordan received every brother, sister, child, elderly who left behind war atrocities in 1967. Caritas Jordan worked on alleviating the suffering of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. In 1982, Caritas Jordan received tens of thousands of Lebanese people who fled the civil war. Since 1991, Caritas Jordan has been working with Iraqi refugees, offering more than 1 million services that targeted Iraqis who have been suffering in the aftermath of the 2003 war.

We thought that war chapters ended with the Gulf war, but unfortunately we began a new episode with what had been called “Arab Spring”. This situation

has put our area, which is rich with culture, civilizations and values, in a revolving cycle of violence that could not eventually achieve peace; therefore, we have started to work again with our partners. Three years ago, a new tragic war erupted in Syria and Caritas role has been more than providing services, as love goes beyond this. Our aim is to disseminate the culture of giving, solidarity, peace, so we have started to work with our Syrian brethren, not only for them, but to help them overcome the negative war impacts that claimed the lives of more than 150,000 persons, demolished most of the Syrian cities, eliminated ancestors’ heritage and caused displacement to millions of women and children.

Today, we extend our gratitude to all our partners who believed in the need to lend a hand and build new bridges between human beings. Our deepest appreciation goes to the Swiss government and people, as well as to Caritas Switzerland for the support, pieces of advice and contribution.

Peace is our utmost goal and the aim we aspire to fulfill. Peace is not only made between friends but the real Peace is made between different parties. Peace is not a commodity to be sold and purchased but it is a process to be build and reconciliation, as the Saint Great Pope John Paul II once said that there is no peace without justice and no justice without mercy.

Hence, Caritas Jordan’s role is to spread love that has no limits and does not discriminate between color, race, gender, but it includes every brother, in a bid to bring back hope and real peace to their heart.

I reiterate my thankfulness for your love, support and solidarity. And only together we will make the change.
Today and even if the life made us do what it is destined; we will oblige life to do what we want to see.
